Engagement Shoot – What is it and why do you need one?

An engagement shoot or pre-wedding shoot as they are sometimes called are a fun experience and serve many purposes. You don’t have to have just got engaged or even be engaged, it’s a portrait shoot with the emphasis on you two as a couple.

I’ll spend 1-2 hours with you in an environment you feel comfortable, be it a city such as Cheltenham (like Gareth and Katie did), Bristol or Birmingam (like Sam and Serena did) or somewhere in the Cotswold countryside (like Becky and Kevin did). If you aren’t sure what to wear, I always suggest something you feel comfortable in. Dress up or dress down, it’s up to you.

Knowing, prior to your wedding day, how I work and communicate means one less thing for you think about when the big day finally arrives. It’s an opportunity for me to instil trust as your photographer and for us to get to know each other better.

It’s a fact that everyone looks happier and more relaxed when they are being photographed by someone they are comfortable with.

Engagement shoots are also a chance for me to gain an insight into you as a couple. It’s a relaxed, fun time, a chance for me to capture your energy and connection. If you aren’t comfortable having your picture taken or just not used to it, then an engagement shoot is a must. Wedding days often go by quickly so being able to relax with your photographer means more time at the bar with your guests!

Most importantly, you receive around 60 professional photographs of you both together. Proper pictures. Not selfies, not featuring your cat clawing at your hair and not including someone’s thumb over the lens at 2am walking home from the pub. Unless that’s what you want of course!

Below is a selection of some of my favourite engagement shoot images and some super kind words from some super lovely couples!

“Colm and I knew as soon as we got engaged that we wanted Marcus to take our wedding photographs after meeting him at a close friends wedding and we immediately booked him over two years in advance!  When it came to our engagement shoot, Marcus found us the perfect location and was quick to answer any questions we had, like what to wear! On the day we felt completely at ease just taking a stroll and laughing and joking while Marcus snapped away. We were so happy with our engagement photographs that we have used one for our save the date cards and can’t wait for him to capture our big day!”

“We chose to do a photo shoot for our invites instead of doing an engagement shoot, simply because we wanted to use the photos on our invites and didn’t have any good ones!

We definitely do now – so many that we couldn’t decide which ones to use. We were really excited about Marcus being our photographer before we had the photo shoot and now cannot wait to see what he does with our wedding pics!”
